September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicide is the No. 1 most preventable cause of death for all ages, so suicide prevention cannot be limited to only the month of September. Suicide does not discriminate, but there are groups that have a higher risk based on measurable data. Often overlooked, there are a number of warning signs and risk factors that could help prevent suicide if people were aware of them.

Higher Risk Populations:

Those struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders
Veterans and First Responders (law enforcement, fireman, EMT’s etc.)
Elderly or those living in isolation
LGBTQ population
But everyone, in the right situation, may be at risk!

Warning Signs:

Talking or drawing about death
Giving away prized possessions
Saying comments like “you won’t have to worry about me much longer” or “they would be better off without me”

Risk Factors may Include:

Recent divorce, forced move, loss of a job
Death of a close family member or friend, especially due to suicide
Increased medical concerns or legal issues
A feeling of helplessness or hopelessness

Huntington County is fortunate to have a community that is willing to talk about suicide and mental health. The community offers various opportunities to learn about suicide prevention through QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) classes and “It Takes Us All,” which is an introduction to suicide prevention classes and lifelines at our middle schools.

There are also three community events being held in September this year.

A joint proclamation will be signed Tuesday, September 8, at 11:30 a.m. in the Courthouse Rotunda.
On Tuesday, September 15, at 6 p.m. at the Huntington North High School Auditorium, there will be a community conversation on suicide and mental health. Valuable information and community resources will be provided. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, September 19 at 6 p.m., the 15th annual Walk for Hope will be held at the multipurpose track at Huntington North High School. Gates open at 5:30.
